After many months of fundraising, we managed to send 3 players to Montréal for the 2025 Canadian University and Collegiate Championships! Playing we had our very own pres Matt Bicknell (Men’s Open), Treasurer Arthur Wormser (Men’s C Singles) and Melisa Fletcher in the Women’s B Singles. VP Cara also made a trip of it and supported the team all weekend, sadly having to withdraw from competition due to an ongoing elbow injury. Here's a quick recap of how it went!
Melisa has been improving in leaps and bounds this year and heading to as many tournaments as possible. She had some tough games in the Women’s B singles, playing 5 games and winning 3 out of 5! We are really excited to see how she continues to improve.
There were some upsets in the men’s open with both the number 1 and 2 seed losing in the semis so Matt had a heated 3/4th place play off against his old co-captain Max. The game went to 5 and he gave all of us watching a heart attack but just missed out on the medals in the end.
Last but definitely not least, VP Finance Arthur had an incredible weekend, winning all 5 of his matches in the men’s C draw and storming to a 1st place finish, let’s gooooo Arthur!!
So proud of the whole team! Showing up at these these big events is going to be vital in our application to UBC to become an official Thunderbirds Sports Club in the next year or two. 💪
What an incredible tournament for everyone involved! Every player gave their all, and we saw some fantastic performances throughout.
Quick recap below!
Mhad (Men's 6th Division): While Mhad didn’t secure any big wins this time, his effort and determination were evident in every match. It's all about learning and growing, and we’re sure Mhad will come back stronger than ever. Keep pushing, you’ve got this!
Soie (Women's 2nd Division): Soie showed great resilience, securing some wins in a packed division. We’re excited to see what’s next!
Melisa (Women's 2nd Division): What an outstanding performance from Melisa! She dominated the competition and won all 4 of her matches coming in 1st place in her division. Huge congratulations on the well-deserved win!
Khushi (Women's Open): Khushi earned a fantastic 3rd place in the Women’s Open with an impressive run. Her performance was strong, and she displayed incredible focus and skill. A well-deserved podium finish, and we’re sure Khushi will be pushing for even higher placements next time!
Kate (Women's Open): Kate gave us a thrilling final, finishing in a very close 2nd place with a nail-biting 3-2 scoreline. She fought hard and showed incredible heart throughout the tournament. That final was anyone’s game, and Kate showed she’s right there at the top. Fantastic work!
Congratulations everyone!
At the end of January we sent a team of 9 athletes to the Jesters Post Secondary Competition at UVic on Vancouver Island. Thank you to Jesters and BC Squash for travel funding for this comp.
It was a really fun weekend and the first trip away that we have taken as a squad, a big first step for our baby new club!
We entered two teams of 4 in the team competition on Friday night:
- Team 1: Matt, Aryan, Kate & Khushi
- Team 2: Arthur, Melisa, Soie & Mhad
It was a pretty tough field, Team 2 had some hard matches but came 2nd in the end, and Team 1 ended with a pretty tight 2-2 scoreline vs UVic but lost on games. We’ll get them next year!
And then all 8 players + Cara also took part in the individual tournament over Saturday and Sunday, with Matt coming away victorious in the top division and Kate crowned Champion in her division!
It was also just a gloriously sunny weekend over in Victoria :)
Big UBC turnout
Division Winner!
Hannah Division Winner!
The BC Open was one of the first tournaments UBC Squash took part in, it was a very chaotic weekend with many matches and we had 7 members playing! A quick list:
Tanaya (won her division without losing a game), Hannah (division winner), Melisa (2nd in division), Mona (first tournament!), Arthur (got stood up for an 8am game…), Aryan (3rd in a very stacked div), Cara (managed to avoid playing Tanaya 😅).
Great turnout for UBC Squash's first ever competition!
